How long is a beat?
The more precise a signal has to be...
the more likely it is to arrive late.
Like noise, delay is a psychological effect. Delay occurs when we expect a signal to arrive at a certain time, but it arrives after that time instead.
We can work to ensure that our signal arrives 'on time', or we can relax our expectations.
Let the slowest signal define the beat.
That way everyone arrives on time.
In these recordings we experimented with 'Twinkle, Twinkle'. First we sang it at a slow tempo so that even the most latent signal could be heard before moving on to the next syllable. There are plenty of possibilities for composing music at such slow tempi.
As a separate experiment we sped up the recording to see if it sounded more homogenous, and it totally did.
